THE ILLUSTRIOUS HOST OF THE NIGHTSHIFT
David Samson - can he get a witness?David Samson

As far as records show, I was born in Northern California, and moved to Southern California before relocating to the Pacific Northwest. Then a 20-year stint in Boulder, Colorado. I relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 1991 to be near my father and family during his waning years. I spent a short time on Guam, which I return to for business normally once a year. After my father's death in 1993, I discovered that my parents had contacted the doctors to determine if I was retarded since my entire existence revolved around 1) sleeping, 2) eating and 3) laughing. This was corroborated further since my office staff consistently believe that I was dropped as a child.

I was working in a local grocery store as an evening Customer Service manager where it was regular for me to address customers and employees via the public address system. On numerous occasions, many people came to the counter with suggestions that I investigate radio or television or requests to sing a few bars of Barry White. Since I realized I have a face (body) for radio, I took the course at Bellevue Community College and hence "David Samson" was born.

I started playing Jazz on the 3 am to 6 am shift at KBCS 91.3 FM. I had done this for six months when I was contacted by the Program Director, who asked if I wanted to move to Thursdays, midnight to 3 am. I thought it was manna from Heaven. It was over six years at that time slot, a few awards and copious amounts of less-than-productive Fridays, when I petitioned the station for an earlier time slot.

So now here I sit, Saturdays from 10 pm to 1 am with the "New" Nightshift, but the goal is still the same: HAVE FUN. The most important lesson given to me by my instructors was not segues, not tailoring your voice to sound like Casey Casem, but to have fun. That is something I strive for every show.

The wealth of great Blues musicians here in the area makes the job of a DJ much easier. As more gain attention and the financial backing to produce their music, we as DJ's and the listeners are the beneficiaries of their lifelong work. This is something that The Nightshift has strived to support for over eight years.

It is the prophecy of The Nightshift to promote Blues music and provide a medium to showcase local musicians and their wonderful talent. It is also to not only educate but to entertain. But keep in mind, The Nightshift is not a documentary, it is a celebration of the art form we all love which is Blues.
